What’s next for weed?

More than two years since legal recreational marijuana sales started, Washington pot businesses have seen more than $1.48 billion in total sales, raising more than $350 million in excise taxes, according to the state.
But while sales have almost only increased, questions about the future of the market linger.
Beyond the industry-unique issues of regulation and the fact that marijuana is still illegal federally, it’s not yet clear when the market, which saw volatile prices and supply issues during its early days, will start to balance out in terms of supply and demand.
“We’re two years into a very fledgling industry, so to some extent, the sort of unpredictable nature of this industry is to be expected,” Washington CannaBusiness Association Executive Director Vicki Christophersen said.

Oregon agencies warn pot growers of pesticide use

BEND, Ore. — State agencies are reminding marijuana producers to limit their use of pesticides in the wake of two recent public health alerts.
The Bend Bulletin reported that a letter from three state agencies warns that cannabis producers whose products test below “action levels” for permitted pesticides may still be violating state regulations if they use pesticides banned by the state Pesticide Control Act.
An action level is a low pesticide measure that the authority requires of testing laboratories as a measure of accuracy. Action levels do not indicate a safe level.
The letter, co-signed Monday by the heads of the Health Authority, Oregon Liquor Control Commission and Oregon Department of Agriculture, says growers that failed test results are referred to the Agriculture Department for further investigation.

Marijuana spending passes that of spirits

Tacoma — Marijuana sales passed a quiet milestone in Washington in the first three months of 2016.
For the first time, residents and visitors as a whole spent more on cannabis products than on hard alcohol, based on an analysis of purchase and tax records from two state agencies.
In the first quarter of 2016, people spent $19.1 million more on marijuana than spirits, which includes the cost of the products and associated taxes. By the second quarter, that gap was $52.3 million. Those amounts include state taxes.
Spirits sales include sales directly to customers as well as to bars or restaurants, but do not include wine and beer. Marijuana sales include all cannabis products but not paraphernalia.
In July, the state shuttered medical marijuana shops, sending all sales through licensed recreational marijuana storefronts. Sales at retail pot shops shot up by almost $100 million in the third quarter, to $398.2 million.

Alcohol giant Constellations eyeing putting marijuana in beverages

Constellation Brands, the alcohol giant that sells Corona beer and Svedka vodka, is considering a new approach to livening up its beverages: marijuana.
“We’re looking at it,” Constellation Chief Executive Officer Rob Sands said in an interview. “There are going to be alcoholic beverages that will also contain cannabis.”
The legalization of marijuana across parts of the U.S. — spurred by election-night victories — is creating a huge new market for legal weed. Voters approved marijuana for recreational use in California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada. That brings the tally of states with legal pot to eight, plus Washington, D.C., meaning one in five American adults now lives in an area where it is legal to get high.

Oregon towns prep for legal pot

SALEM, Ore. — Some 30 counties and cities in Oregon approved some type of marijuana businesses in last week’s election, and officials in those communities now must establish rules for every step in the production and supply chain.
When voters legalized recreational marijuana statewide two years ago, the communities — from the cowboy town of Pendleton to Sweet Home in the Willamette Valley — opted out. But many switched it up this month, voting to allow at least some form of the pot industry, including medical marijuana.
“No one has done this in Oregon since liquor Prohibition,” said Scott Winkels, a lobbyist with the League of Oregon Cities. “This is the first time we’ve had to step in and develop and regulate a marketplace for a controlled substance since 1933.”
