PORTLAND — Authorities say a man has been badly burned in a hash oil explosion at his Tigard apartment.
The man, who has not been identified, was taken to a Portland hospital after the incident. An update on his condition was not known Monday.
Police had responded to his apartment Saturday night to find a window blown out and glass scattered around the parking lot.
The victim, who had been alone at the time of the explosion, came out of the apartment with visible burns to his body, neck and face.
Police say he had been trying to create hash oil, a process that involves the extraction of marijuana and use of flammables.
The incident remains under investigation.

PASCO — A 24-year-old Pasco man has admitted he was protecting a backyard marijuana grow when he fired at a 16-year-old boy who reached over the fence to steal some plants.
Pedro Orta-Zuniga pleaded guilty in federal court Friday to possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. He faces at least five years in prison.
The Tri-City Herald says (http://goo.gl/5JEH7K ) police were called to a local hospital Oct. 1 where the boy was treated for gunshot wound in the arm.
The teen told officers he and a friend spotted marijuana plants in a Pasco yard and wanted to steal it. When the teen reached over the fence, a man on the other side fired multiple shots.
Officers went to the home and found Orta-Zuniga hiding amid the growing area. They also found a rifle, a pistol and bullet holes in the fence.
Orta-Zuniga admitted slept in the yard with the guns to protect about 15 marijuana plants from thieves.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Connecticut’s top court has ruled that a state worker fired for smoking marijuana on the job in 2012 was penalized too harshly and should get his job back.
The Supreme Court justices said Friday that a lower court judge was wrong to overturn the decision of an arbitrator. The arbitrator had ordered University of Connecticut Health Center maintenance worker Gregory Linhoff suspended without pay for six months and subjected to random drug testing for one year. Officials fired Linhoff after the judge’s ruling.
State officials said allowing Linhoff to return to work would violate public policy against drug use in the workplace and send a bad message to other workers.
The Supreme Court said Linhoff deserved to be disciplined, but state policy doesn’t require firing him.

ROGUE RIVER, Ore. — Police in the southern Oregon community of Rogue River say a man walking through a park discovered a portable toilet filled with marijuana plants.
The agency posted a photo on social media Wednesday, saying it’s the largest seizure of pot the department has ever made.
Marijuana grows are common in southern Oregon, which has some of the nation’s best conditions for outdoor cultivation.
Chief Ken Lewis said Thursday police still don’t know how the pot got there. He said it could be anything from a pick up point to a disgruntled citizen making a statement about all the marijuana grows.
Lewis said a public works employee checked the toilet three hours before the discovery was made and it was empty. People playing tennis on a nearby court saw nothing suspicious.

A new Gallup poll out Monday finds that percent of American adults who say they currently smoke marijuana has nearly doubled over the past three years.
In 2013, only 7 percent of adults said they were marijuana smokers. When Gallup asked again in July of this year, 13 percent admitted to current marijuana use. That works out to more than 33 million adult marijuana users in the U.S. If America’s marijuana users resided in one state, it would be bigger than Texas and second only to California in population.
There are currently about 40 million cigarette smokers in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Given that cigarette use is in decline, marijuana use could become more prevalent than cigarette use in just a few years’ time.
There are likely several factors driving these numbers. Since 2013, recreational marijuana markets opened in Colorado and Washington, and several other states voted to legalize marijuana in the fall 2014. It’s likely that adults ..

FLANDREAU, S.D. — Two consultants who worked with a Native American tribe on its plans to open the nation’s first marijuana resort in rural South Dakota have been charged with drug offenses, the state’s attorney general announced Wednesday.
The charges come eight months after the Flandreau Santee Sioux destroyed their crop amid fears of a federal raid, abandoning an ambitious scheme to develop “an adult playground” that they estimated could net as much as $2 million a month in profits. Tribal leaders this week said they don’t plan to revisit the proposal, and instead will use their greenhouse to grow vegetables, including tomatoes. The tribe declined immediate comment on the charges against the consultants.
Attorney General Marty Jackley, who warned against the tribe’s proposal from the start, said that a range of marijuana possession charges had been brought against two top officials of Monarch America, the Colorado-based company hired to work with the tribe on the resort idea.

SEATTLE — King County has lifted its temporary ban on legal marijuana businesses in unincorporated areas.
The Seattle Times reports that the Metropolitan King County Council voted 5-3 Monday to allow licensed pot operations, with some limitations to address the concerns of rural residents. Those include that marijuana grow operations can be located only on parcels of 10 acres or more.
Before the council adopted the moratorium in April, marijuana farms were allowed in all “rural area” zones.
The council also voted to require 1,000-foot buffers between retail stores. That was in response to complaints that pot shops were clustering in Skyway, White Center and other poorer parts of the county.
